Photographer’s Choice – George Kosinski

A Fleeting Moment of Near Perfection

George Kosinski - Georgetown, SC Harbor

George Kosinski – Georgetown, SC Harbor

Home to George this winter is a cabin in Hobcaw Barony, a 15,560 acre tract near Georgetown on a peninsula called Waccamaw Neck between Winyah Bay and the Atlantic. In early January of this year he captured this amazing image in Georgetown harbor. Look closely at all the elements that lead your eye directly to the focal point. The dark gray clouds provide distinct leading lines to the vivid sunset afterglow. The bright clouds form a triangle which points down to the same brightness. The cloud formation is then reflected in the water to form an inverted triangle pointing toward the same area. The sillhouette of the smoke stack and its reflection serves as an anchor to hold the eye. Even the small wood piling in the water just to the left of the smokestack adds a certain balance to the scene. By framing the horizon low and shifting the image to the left of center, George found the ideal composition.
Could George with his artistic eye, brush and watercolors create a more compelling composition? It sure wouldn’t be easy.

Your introduction, Mr. R and Betty’s kind comment was a very illuminating moment and I learned a lot about this image from another insight. Thank you!

I should say, I frequently pace the waterfront in Georgetown with purpose in mind, most especially to thumb my nose against the paper mill and the steelworks and this particular evening was no different. The offensive odor is quite unforgettable and the the official line from the mill might be noteworthy yet; “we don’t know where the smell is coming from!!!”

I happened to have my camera with me and, as Christine pointed out, “we can find beauty anywhere”, when we pause to look and see in the right moment of time. What was especially significant about this arrangement was how it totally flew in the face of my pet-dislike of the day. What emerged was a complete eclipse of the negative elements of human activity, by an irresistible and overwhelming infusion of sheer cosmic beauty which we must leave in God’s Hands, the Master Artist.

Hopefully it will encourage us to realise that is exactly how it is meant to be. To look, even listen, to the beauty around us and not be intimidated or distracted by offenses.

I miss the mountains – they beckon!

This is so beautiful! I love the colors and the symmetry and the juxtaposition of nature and the industrial silhouette of the water tower and smokestacks, etc. We can find beauty anywhere!

Splendid photo GK, a feast for the eyes after the bleak midwinter scenes around here. And a splendid write-up of the photo GR. I must say your comments rival those normally presented to us by GK. I am always amazed and enlightened by all that you two can “see” in a photograph. Leading lines, triangles, inverted triangles, anchors, balance, framing low, shifting off center – what an education! Thanks to you both from an admiring student.
