Photo of the Week – Rosie Kosinski

It’s a Sunday in Davidson. After church at a busy local restaurant. It’s warm, the sun is shining, the frock and sandals are new. Mom and dad are standing in line. I’m catching up on the local real estate listings!

For this posting it would be best to let the photographer do the talking. “Whenever my dad comes to visit we love to go to Toast in Davidson, a quaint restaurant with delicious food, always jam packed with hungry church-goers dressed up to the nines. One such young lady was this little girl, whom I watched for a good 10 minutes prance around with her brothers and sister, and eventually after pillaging the magazine rack by the side of the restaurant, settled herself down very gracefully, crossed her legs elegantly, and assumed a very mature quiet pose that I just had to capture. She looked up a few times to make sure people were taking notice, because she was very consciously imitating the adults about her. I had to snap the shot of her sitting there, fascinated by the real estate pictures, and holding her place confidently in a way only a child can.”

It’s all about light, shadows, colors, textures and hope.  It’s a lovely side of humanity.

Photo of the Week – Anita Hale

This image is another example of the innovative and creative uses of a camera. It manages to give a positive result even though it consists largely of overblown highlights and blocked shadows, either of which can be fatal in many scenes. For both to occur simultaneously and yet produce a lovely image is rare indeed. Only the center “creek” area might be said to be “properly” exposed. The stark contrast between the bright snow in the foreground and the sky in the background with the black dead weeds make it comparable to a woodcut. The silhouetted crane is undoubtedly the focal point.

Whether the image succeeds or not is for each individual to decide for himself.

Recent member Anita Hale gets credit for this photograph. She is a native of Grassy Creek (where this shot was taken on Christmas day of 2009) but spends her winters in Miami. She has no recollection of herons being seen in the area when she was growing up. As with other members who fly south for the winter, we look forward to meeting her this summer at the Arts Council.
