Mike Acquesta lead a project to furnish photographs to be displayed in the recently renovated West Jefferson Town Hall. Members of the Ashe Camera Club volunteered their time and talent to photograph scenes that portray the town as it exists today, images that might be considered typical of the town, its activities, buildings, residents and visitors. This was a long-term project that allowed members to set their own schedules and select the best scenes in all weather and light conditions.
Mike has written a more detailed description:
“At one of the Ashe Camera Club’s meetings last year, one of the presenters told us, as a club, to give back to the community, share our skills with the community at large. Over my 35+ years as a project engineer for many small NC municipalities, I have come to see that many town halls show photos that were taken of the towns 75 to 100+ years ago. There never seems to be any photos of what the town looks like in 2012. The Town of West Jefferson just had its town hall renovated. As the town’s engineer and a photographer, I suggested to the town that they may want to hang some pictures in the town hall of what the town looks line in 2012. They accepted the idea. This provided an avenue for the club to give back to the community. I mentioned this idea to the Ashe Camera Club last September and we have taken it on as a project starting this month – April 2012. Participating ACC members are tasked with taking quality photos of the town as it currently exists: downtown, residential areas, churches, and other iconic visions of West Jefferson. The project is expected to take 4 to 6 months to complete. Of the many, many photos participating club members will likely take, the town will select 6 to 8 to be framed and hung in the newly renovated town hall. Ashe Camera Club photographers will donate their photography skills – taking the photos and post processing efforts. The cost of the picture printing and framing has already been secured. Photos not selected for framing may be selected to be shown on the West Jefferson web site.”
Completed winter 2013, the project was a huge success. Below, you can see the 16 images that were selected to be printed, framed and put on display inside town hall, as well as the ‘thank you’ letter received from the Town.
